After providing hints on the Exynos 64-Bit processors Samsung has now revealed their latest LPDDR4 mobile DRAM chip. This is not only the industry first LPDDR4 mobile DRAM, but it’s also the first mobile DRAM to fit 4GB on a Single DRAM. Samsung has hinted that the new 4GB RAM modules will be included in “UHD (1440p) Smartphones, Tablets and Ultra-slim Notebooks” so the Galaxy S5 may be the first device to get it, the other plus side to this will be a 64-Bit processor as the 32-Bit processors are limited to a maximum 3GB RAM usage. Korean Media also hinted the usage of the new 4GB DDR4 RAM in the Galaxy S5 and Young-Hyun Jun, executive vice president, memory sales & marketing, Samsung Electronics quoted as following on the new 4GB DDR4 DRAM
– This next-generation LPDDR4 DRAM will contribute significantly to faster growth of the global mobile DRAM market, which will soon comprise the largest share of the entire DRAM market
Features of the new 4GB LPDDR4 Mobile DRAM chip.
What Samsung did is that they put 8 Gigabits (1GB Mobile Memory) on a single die, now they can successfully combine four of those single 1GB dies for a total of 4GB of mobile memory. The new DDR4 Mobile DRAM is Fabricated on the 20nm manufacturing process, these chips are reportedly 50% faster than the fastest present LPDDR3 memory the market has to offer, also it consumea 40% less power at just a 1.1 volts. The data transfer speeds the new 8Gb LPDDR4 DRAM chip can achieve are 3,200Mbps per pin – twice the speed of currently produced 20nm LPDDR3 DRAM.
It seems like Samsung has once again proved that they are capable of “Getting thins done” and this is a great new product to say GoodBye to 2013. Stay tuned for more updates and feel free to share your views in the comments section below.
