Google has released Android Oreo 8.1 update for its two devices, i.e., the Pixel and the Pixel 2 devices. The new update includes fixes for some bugs, performance improvements and the major highlight is it comes with a cool feature called Wi-Fi speed label.
The Community Manager, Orrin said “Today, and over the next few weeks, we’ll begin the rollout of Android 8.1 Oreo to Pixel and Pixel 2 devices. This update contains a number of features, bug fixes, and general performance/stability improvements.”
There are a few new features that we want to highlight: WiFi Speed labels so you can see the expected speed of certain nearby popular public Wi-Fi networks.
In Android 8.1, you’ll be able to see the network name (SSID) and directly connect to the network—all within the notification. It called for Open network notifications.
Smart text selection improves the copy and pastes experience: Android Oreo now recognizes text when you long press, highlights the relevant word(s), and then recommends a next logical step via a suggested app. It can recognize addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, URLs and more.
Android 8.1 Oreo also includes some bug fixes including improved Bluetooth connectivity with Android Auto, audio improvements while recording video, touchscreen sensitivity, general stability and others.
For the WiFi speed labels, the strength has been there, but the speed is new (Slow, OK, Fast, Very Fast). Keep in mind that this will only show under open networks. The speeds for each label are Slow means 0 to 1 Mbps. If the label is OK, then it means the speed is 1 Mbps to 5 Mbps. For the Fast label, the speed is 5 Mbps to 20 Mbps and Very Fast = 20 Mbps+ speed.
Orrin stated, for users on DP2 to 8.1 final, the best option is to wait for the Android 8.1 OTA, which will take DP2 users to the final.
