Sony created two very capable flagship smartphones, the Xperia Z and Xperia Z1 and additionally a Phablet, the Xperia Z Ultra last year but it seems that they are not putting enough effort when it comes to updating them, Sony has practically abandoned it’s customers who did pay a handsome amount of money it buying these Xperia Kings. Samsung and HTC have already started updating their 2013 flagships to Android 4.4 but Sony has been continuously pushing those dates back and now an article from IBTimes suggests that the launch of the Xperia Z2 will slow things down again. The update is now expected to come around April according to the official Sony Blog, which has failed to keep most of its promises.
At this point there are no Xperia devices running Android version above 4.3 JellyBean, except the Xperia Z2 and what makes it even worse is that many non-flagship devices are stuck on 4.1.2 and there aren’t even any hopes for them. Several Xperia handsets notably Xperia SP, Xperia T and Xperia V did just get Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and now Sony has confirmed to push another build version due to some major bugs reported by consumers regarding the first one. Xperia Z series devices that are confirmed to get Android 4.4.2 KitKat include Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z1. Some less fortunate ones that include Xperia SP, T and V are still “under investigation” but judging from the speed that Sony is progressing it isn’t looking good at all.
